Christopher Davis of University of Illinois at Chicago talks at the first Fine International Conference on Gigapixel Imaging for Science, November 11-13 2010 at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. While doing archaeology at a rock art site, several panoramic pictures were taken of ancient drawings - some were measured-by hand, but others were not. Subsequent interest in the non-measured drawings arose and a method for determining the dimensions of the panoramas were explored in order to use the photo as a map that can be measured freely in future analysis. Objectives: Determine measurements and dimensions in vertical surface panoramas; Simple calculations utilizing field-of-view and distance-to- camera measurements to determine the dimensions; Geo-reference photos in a map program - drape within a grid system using software to measure any dimensions of any objects in the image.
