The hedgehog lives in woodland, farmland and suburban areas. It is nocturnal, and if alarmed will roll itself into a ball, protecting itself against potential predators with its spines.
It feeds on slugs, earthworms, beetles and other insects, and sometimes frogs, small rodents, young birds and birds' eggs.
The European Hedgehog hibernates in the winter.

Many hedgehogs are taken into care each year, mostly injured animals or late-born young unlikely to survive hibernation. They are always returned to the wild, because hedgehogs are no pets! They are never happy in captivity and the stress it causes usually shortens their lives dramatically.
