After the development of radar, the Air Ministry began building radar stations around Britain to provide early warning of air attack on the country. This chain of radar stations was known as the “Home Chain”. Dunkirk was the third chain radar station to be built after 1937. This site was under the control of No 11 Group Fighter Command. Three of the transmitter towers where demolished in 1959 and sold for scrap. The remaining transmitter tower is still in use today by the US Airforce. As such RAF Dunkirk technically remains operational. This site also has many other features but these are for another video. In this video we look at the remains of the transmitter towers and the transmitter block.
