There is no special stuff or soul floating around in our skulls, only blood and brains. True enough. But that doesn't make the brain in charge. The brain is one part of a larger whole that emerges together with body and environment. Explanation only at the neural level has no explanatory power unless it can be related to terms both bodily and ecological. In other words, what does it mean for ME, the body that is born and will die, the organism that needs to eat and shit and go to sleep at night? What it means for a brain, a problem solver, a logic machine, is not at all what it means for my body, my womb, my nourishment, my own concrete existence. Nor is it at all like the meaning of being a node in a larger web of living relationships. The brain is embodied, it is not the cause of consciousness but one aspect of a larger dance between body and ecology. Brain, Body and Life, almost like Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. From each together emerges what we call the world.
