Philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel once taught "What experience and history teach is this, that peoples and governments never have learned anything from history, or acted on principles deduced from it." Children often repeat the mistakes of their parents, and nations repeat the mistakes of the previous generations. A quick study into the history of Isreal in the Bible shows them breaking free from greed and war and putting into the practice principles that produce peace, health and happiness. But it wasn't long until a new generation thinks they know better, and soon there is war, disease and suffering. One of the greatest things you could do for yourself is to walk slowly through a graveyard and think about those who are buried beneath your feet. Ask, "What lesson can I learn from their lives?" The most clear lesson is that life is short and death is sure. If there is one chance in a million that the Bible is right when it says Jesus Christ has 'abolished death', you owe it to your good sense to at least look into what that means. Here is a simple way to understand what that means, but it requires an honest look at your own history: How many lies have you told in your whole life? Have you ever stolen anything? Have you taken God's name in vain (OMG or Jesus's name as a swear word)? These are just 3 of the ten commandments, and if you failed them then by definition you're a liar, a thief and a blasphemer. Unfortunately everyone in the world has broken the ten commandments in some form, so we don't think we are better than you. However if God is to uphold his justice He is forced to punish those who break His law (which is called Hell). But this is confusing because God is supposed to be all loving, right? He is! And that is why He came down as a human (Jesus Christ) and paid for the punishment we deserve on the cross. Jesus then raised from the dead, abolishing death and proving His authority over sin. This is a free gift to us because God loves us. We accept the gift by repenting (turning away from sin and turning to God) and placing our faith (trust) in Jesus. Avoid making the same mistakes many many others have made, which is trying to earn their way into heaven through their own good works. It's not possible. Only through Jesus can we have assurance of salvation.
