(23 Oct 2018) President Donald Trump said the US has the "dumbest immigration laws anywhere in the world." He reiterated his assault on Democrats as the ones responsible for the nation's immigration woes, citing what he calls a "catch and release" system. "Once they set a foot on our land, it's like, 'Welcome to the United States,'" Trump said on Tuesday. Trump also referenced the Central American migrant caravan, estimated to include more than 7,000 people, which has been traveling north toward the U.S. border. "We have a lot of people coming up," Trump said. "We can't let that happen." Trump was addressing a group of local elected officials from California, Alaska and Hawaii who had been invited to Washington for a State Leadership Day event. The initiative has brought officials from across the country to discuss shared federal-local priorities. Trump also echoed comments he made Monday night at a rally for Sen. Ted Cruz in Texas saying, "Call me a nationalist if you'd like, but I don't want companies leaving." On Monday, Trump had criticized so-called globalists, declaring, "You know what I am? I'm a nationalist."
