Some times the New West was just as wild, wooly, and raw hide as the old west. Take for example a man named Bob Hollimon: he was a man with the bark still on, a man who could not be stampeded, a man with no back up in him when it came to facing danger, violence, threats, intimidation, and federal revenuers.... among other hazards of Mojave Desert life. He was noted as hellishly good with a hand gun, which many good bad men were. Hollimon was 50 years old when he came to the East Mojave in the year 1918. He came from Arizona, pushing a few hundred head of cattle into the Lanfair Valley ahead of him. His intention was to keep on going, and not stop in the valley to home stead, but he had a brief confrontation with a bunch of men from the resident cattle company, the old 88 brand. They insulted him and treated him unkindly. Apparently merely to piss off the 88 outfit, Hollimon filed on 640 acres of range the 88 brand had claimed as their own but had not filed on. Perhaps needless to say, the old 88 was not pleased.
