(10 Nov 2018) The leaders of France and Germany held an intimate commemoration on Saturday at the site north of Paris where 100 years ago the vanquished Germans and victorious Allies put an end to World War I. "This day isn't just warning, it's also an encouragement", Angela Merkel said after the visit, the first by a German Chancellor since the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949. Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron used the occasion to laud European peace and to demonstrate how countries that were once bitter enemies need not stay that way. "I say this for the Federal Republic of Germany with full conviction, to do everything to achieve a more peaceful order in the world, even though we know we have very, very much work still ahead of us," Merkel said.
