Snow White joins a gang of bullfighting dwarves in this gorgeous, strikingly original re-working of the fairytale. In 1920s Seville, young Carmen (Sofia Oria) is firmly under the thumb of her evil stepmother, Encarna (Maribel Verdu). Her mother died in childbirth. Her father, Antonio Villalta (Daniel Gimenez Cacho), is a legendary former matador who suffered a disabling injury in the ring. Now Antonio is kept a virtual prisoner by Encarna, but he secretly imparts the secrets of his craft to his daughter. As a teenager, Carmen (Macarena Garcia) eventually escapes and falls in with a travelling band of bullfighting dwarves. But the dastardly Encarna isn't finished with her yet! Writer/director Pablo Berger delivers a hugely imaginative reinvention of the brothers Grimm fairytale. It's also a loving homage to the great silent movies of the 1920s, with a lush, evocative score by Alfonso de Vilallonga. 'Blancanieves' was Spain's official submission to this year's Oscars.
