Speaker: Gerardo Diaz, UC Merced Abstract: For most people, waste is composed of those materials that have little or no value to humans. This vision has resulted in waste management being more or a problem than an opportunity. This issue is particularly true in developing countries where poorly managed waste can become a source of health problems. UC Merced's renewable energy integration strategy, which must be scaled to achieve zero net energy by 2020, relies on three renewable sources available on campus and in many other communities around the world: energy efficiency, solar energy, and liquid/solid waste. The proposed approach is complementary with the goal of reaching zero-landfill waste by 2020. This talk will present the methodologies being analyzed and the potential contribution of campus-generated waste to reach these goals. The strategy is being implemented in a constantly changing environment that will see a fivefold increase in student population at full campus build-out. Part of the Spring 2011 i4Energy Seminar Series. Live broadcast at mms://media.citris.berkeley.edu/webcast. Questions can be sent via Yahoo IM to username: citrisevents.
