India plans to launch its first manned space mission in 2022, sending a three-person team into orbit for up to a week. The government has approved 1.4 billion U.S. dollars for the program, a relatively small amount for a manned space program. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the plan in August, but at that time, it had not been approved by his cabinet. If successful, India will become the fourth nation after Russia, the United States, and China to send a person into space.
