I've been extremely excited (and a little pensive) about the recent crit changes and their impact on MGs. The amount of damage that an MG increases by when it hits an unarmored component is ~2.78 times as effective as its regular DPS of 1. At full strength, I'm dealing about 11.12 DPS with my MG's alone.

To circumvent the new "complaints" about MGs, namely that they're being used on the Spider/scapegoat for a universal hitbox problem, I decided to run in my Cicada 3C. Nobody has issues smacking a Cicada around, and the mech is an inferior MG platform because it lacks arm control and Jump Jets. This is the first time I've run a non-JJ light with the new pathing. It shows. Don't hate. I played 11 games in one sitting before fully eliting the mech.

Anyhoo. I was initially afraid at how powerful MGs had become on paper, but there are several factors that balance them. One is that they cannot be initially great. If an MG user doesn't find exposed components they're going to have a very hard time killing someone. The second is that an MG user must be within brawling distance to deal damage, but they completely forfeit the benefits of brawling (twist/burst) to do so. The third point is that they're still leagues behind the game's current cheese. 2x PPC + Gauss? You need to land one alpha every 4 seconds. This gives you insta-kills via headshot, more range than any other burst weaponry in the game, very little heat, and plenty of time to twist for damage mitigation. 4x MGs? They do more DPS, but need to land 160 shots in that 4 second timeframe (Perfect hit ratio). They have no chance at an insta-kill headshot and must stay on target for the duration of that time. It's no contest.

MGs are finally at the point where a light who has been properly scouting/harassing can pull clutch moves when they see a window of opportunity, but if they just charge opponents they'll do absolutely nothing. Sadly, there is a bug that will randomly freeze your client if you're firing MGs. Derp!
