The red squirrel is a tree-dwelling omnivorous rodent. The coat of the red squirrel varies in colour with time of year and location. There are several different coat colour morphs ranging from black to red. The underside of the squirrel is always white-cream in colour. The lifespan of the red squirrel is on average 3 years.
The red squirrel eats mostly the seeds of trees, neatly stripping conifer cones to get at the seeds within. In this movie the squirrel is feeding on a hazelnut.
When you find a baby squirrel, please leave it alone. If the baby is injured, cold, it's night time or mom does not come to get it within 2-3 hours, the baby is probably orphaned and needs help. Take it to Wildlife Rehabilitator as soon as you can and please ... do not try to raise it yourself!
