As I am getting ready to leave to Africa (again, I have your back and pre-wrote all my blogs before I left), I thought it would be helpful to share with you how I prepare to leave on vacation so I am set up for success (and so I don’t come home 10 pounds heavier, and full of guilt).

I know I am going to a third-world country and my prep could seem much different than just going home for the holidays, but honestly it is not. You can use these tools if you are going on a business trip, Thanksgiving vacation, or weekend get-a-way.

#1 — Know your emotional triggers:

You knew I was going here, and you should’ve guessed it was going to be #1. Preparing yourself for what could throw you off emotionally is the most loving thing you could do for yourself.

Say, while visiting with your dad, he always asks so many questions about about your life (and you internalize it as if he’s insinuating your life is never good enough) that you feel super anxious… You’re most likely going to be running to the pumpkin pie after the conversation is over (with extra whipped cream) if you didn’t prepare yourself for that experience.

But if you are aware that this is a possibility, you can come up with a game plan — like before you go writing down 10 things that you are proud of yourself for accomplishing. You will feel much more satisfied as you are telling him. Or make a plan to excuse yourself to the restroom and do a little EFT Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) Tapping to help calm your body down. When you know who is going to be around and the emotions that the people can trigger, you can create some sort of a game plan to keep you from running to the food.

For me, leaving to Africa I know there will be times when I just want to run home to my nice soft bed and luxurious american lifestyle. In those moments, I plan to either journal, EFT, talk it out with Zac, or put my hand on my heart and say an affirmation like, “In my vulnerability is where my safety lies.”

Just anything that gives me the permission to FEEL my FEELings, so I can let them process through my body, and I can move on to the next emotional experience. (Remember emotions are energy in motion.)

Trust me this is a #WildlyAlive tool you cannot skip and is a beautiful act of self love.
