This scale is a subset from The Diminished octatonic scale: C Diminished is C.D,Eb,F,F#,G#.A,B(eight notes) C Melodic minor #5 is C,D,Eb,F, G#,A,B(seven notes) The last is the same scale without F#. This scale creates new chords that were used a lot for the expressionist composers, like Richard Strauss, Wagner, and more. In Jazz Wayne Shorter with the Miles Davis Qt, in the ’60s used a lot , also Herbie Hancock, Marc Copland, Bill Carrothers, and Kenny Wheeler have been composing and playing with these sounds. Fusion composers like Holdsworth take vantage of Melodic Minor #5. The sound is dark, with tension, always inside the Diminish Tonality. You can not believe how many sounds were inside Diminished Scale, it’s like Pandora’s box. Clusters, quartal harmony, triads, tetrads, etc, all is possible with this new scale. And you know what?
