People's healthcare needs vary enormously and change over time depending age and state of health. On the other hand the cost of healthcare has consistently been rising above the inflation rate over the last decade and a half. Although only about 17% of the South African population, millions of people have had to make the often difficult decision of being on a medical aid to cover their healthcare needs. There are many medical aid schemes in South Africa offering a myriad of healthcare options ranging from hospital plans to comprehensive cover. The question is - do we know all the ins and outs of medical aids? How are they regulated....how do they allocate benefits....and why is it that some people run out of funds halfway through the year...and what can one do to avoid depleting medical savings account too early in the year? Stay tuned because these are some of the questions we will tackle in today's show. We focus on Medical Aids. We've assembled a panel of experts to help us better understand how medical aids work and the responsible use of medical aids. Joining me in this discussion is the Principal Officer of Medshield, the General Manager, Stakeholder Relations from the Council for Medical Schemes and an Executive Director Medschemes.
