The passive bug was an online bug that could be used to absorb the Passive Skills of other characters in the game. This could be used as a kind of Advanced Leveling to make your characters even stronger (details on how to do it are in the link above)

But then, idiotic JP players who didn't know how to do the Passive Bug started calling it a hack and a cheat. It got to the point where these players were doing Witch Hunts for people with passives online. 

If they found anyone with all 36, they would dox their PSN and post it on 2CH(a site that's like JP gamefaqs) with a big "KUSO CHEATER" in red. Then the rest of the thread would go on and ridicule this person for a couple of pages saying things like "I wish this person would die." and "They should just quit this game."

I've seen that happen to a few of my JP friends and it made me angry to say the least.

It didn't stop there. These idiotic JP players eventually said to the Devs: ""If you don't remove the Passive Bug, i'm boycotting this game all SAO games to come".

Now that's a hell of a way to put pressure on a development company so they had no choice but to address the Passive Bug and in Version 2.00, the Passive Bug has been made unusable.

All existing Passive have been stripped from everyone's characters and we can't do the bug again.

I put countless hours into getting almost all passives onto every character. Having them be removed is basically like the game taking away all of your weapon mastery in an update.

That pissed me off, yeah. But what pisses me off the most is not that I lost my skills. Its the fact that these little babies can just say "Cheat!" and then get their way without even knowing what they're talking about.

On top of all of this, the devs said: "If there is a demand, we will implement Custom Characters in this game"

What did the playerbase say?

"Who cares about that. Remove the Passive Bug instead."
