Is a coconut a nut? 
The answer is a bit complicated. Botanically speaking, the coconut is a fruit - specifically a drupe also called a stonefruit. A drupe is a fruit with a hard stony covering enclosing the seed (like a peach or olive). Drupes have 3 layers,  the exocarp (outer layer), the mesocarp (fleshy middle layer), and the endocarp (hard, woody layer that surrounds the seed). However, a coconut is also a seed since it is the part of the plant that  germinates and a shoot emerges from. The “baby” plant has food in the seed called the endosperm. The endosperm is what makes up most of the seed and, in the coconut’s case, it is the white stuff that we eat. To make it more complicated, a nut can be defined as  a one- seeded fruit. Because of this loose definition, a coconut can also be considered a nut - although not a true nut because of the way it opens at maturity. So what is the final answer? Although it can loosely be called a seed or a nut, when it comes down to it, it is a fruit......although, The United States Food and Drug Administration consider coconuts to be a tree nut - so there you go. :) Did you get the answer right?
