The North American bighorn sheep (Ovis Canadensis) are descendants from wild sheep found on this continent millions of years ago. In days long gone, they migrated from Siberia to Alaska, crossing the frozen waters of the Bering Sea. from Alaska, they spread out all over North America.
But time has not left the bighorns unaffected: the sheep found in Alaska have thinner horns than their southern relatives.
The bighorns in the south nowadays consist of seven different species, and their habitats range from the icy planes of the Rockies all the way down to Mexico.
Bighorns are heavy, athletic animals and feel perfectly at home on mountain verges. Both males and females have horns, but those of the males are bigger, more massive and more curled.
As time passes, the horns get larger. Bighorns are known for head-to-head combat between males.
During the October mating season, the males or rams, test the strength of their horns on each other. And the strongest? .... well, he gets the opportunity to visit the ladies (ewes).
Bighorn sheep inhabit grassy mountains, alpine meadows and foothill country near rocky cliffs that allow quick escape.
