It's no secret that I had a big thing for the original Double Dragon arcade game. I owned and played the C64 home computer versions and the Amiga version and all were woeful, to say the least.

I'd seen screenshots of the Mega Drive version and the sprites looked extremely faithful to the arcade, so I thought I'd play it through and see what I was missing.

It's not perfect, but I would probably have resorted to giving sexual favours in return for a copy of this game had a I known just how close it comes to the arcade. The graphics are great and the combat is almost identical to the arcade machine.

I did spot a couple of glitches whilst playing. If you hit an opponent carrying an oil drum or a boulder then the item disappears into thin air, never to be seen again. I also managed to beat Willy with an elbow to the face as he emerged from his door on the final level, which killed him instantly (I re-recorded the fight properly though for the sake of completion).

Another incidental point I noted was that the green Abobo has a jump animation that isn't in the arcade version.

The sound is what I'd expect from the Mega Drive, but it's functional and the music from each level in the arcade is present and correct.

All things considered, this felt like a solid port and I would have given worlds to have been able to play this back in the day. I had to make do with the C64 version and it's reknowned "cut-in-half" sprites...
