Are you a shop owner looking for a good apprentice tech? What if I told you there were lots of places to find intelligent young men and women with proven skill sets and good work ethics that were just dying for the opportunity to work for you? Would you take advantage of this "farm team"? That's exactly what you'll find all across the country in trade programs like the one I visited at Wesley Chapel High School, just north of Tampa, FL. This still young program is working on its NATEF certification, and in the short 6 years its been in business, it has grown from two small classrooms and an outside work pad to a 6-bay, nicely equipped learning laboratory. And while they are off to a great start, they are not unique. There are similar programs going on all over this country and they are waiting to meet YOU...the shop owner and/or dealer principle. What does it take to get involved? A few hours of your time to provide advice and encouragement to both the students and the instructors. To gain an even greater return, set up a "shadowing" program that would allow senior students with proven skill sets to work beside your best techs, or even by your side! Help out with equipment and tooling if you can, but your greatest contribution is yourself. You can afford that, can't you? The future of our industry can't afford you NOT to. Contact your local school district or search for the nearest NATEF-certified program in your area by logging on to http://www.natef.org.
