The centenary birth celebrations of Albertina Sisulu got underway across SA. Ma Sisulu renowned internationally for her role in the liberation of South africans joined the ANC Womens League in 1955 and took part in the launch of the FREEDOM Charter the same year. She was also the the only woman present at the birth of the anc youth league. On the 9 august 1956 she joined Helen Joseph and Sophia de Bruyn in the march of 20 thousand women to the Union Buildings in protest against discriminatory pass laws of the time. Ma Sisulu was arrest after her husband skipped jail to go underground in 1963 becoming the first woman to be arrested under the General Laws AMendment Act of 1963 which gave police the power to hold suspects in detention for 90 days without charging them. Our reporter Manqoba Mchunu is attending the centenary celebrations for us and we are live to him now. For more news, visit: sabcnews.com
