It was International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Thursday, and Delhi Police had a field day. First, they arrested another Afghan national for smuggling in 1,000 grams of heroin; then they nabbed two drug traffickers and seized 3kg heroin worth Rs 12 crore from them. The Afghan man, Abdull Maliq (55), would come to India often and had the same modus operandi like his countryman held a day earlier: he would swallow heroin capsules, fly down to India, and flush out the pills. He told police that a large number of smugglers from Delhi and Rajasthan are active in Delhi for receiving the drugs. The crime branch is now trailing these conduits. "A team led by DCP Bhisham Singh had received information that an Afghan national would bring a drug consignment to a Nigerian national in Mehrauli-Badarpur Road. A trap was laid and Malik and Chidi Berr Nwayota alias James (34) were apprehended," said Ashok Chand, addl CP (crime). A team led by inspector Attar Singh got information that a gang member would come to the Wazirabad flyover to deliver heroin to a contact. Babu was apprehended," said Sanjeev Yadav, DCP (special cell).
