Many wildflowers are considered weeds, but they provide food and shelter for a plethora of species late in the season when most flowers are long gone. These "weeds" can be grow in a variety of conditions and climates by collecting seeds to plant around the garden or even indoors. Some species, like dandelion, are edible and others, like long grass and mullein, make beautiful decorative plants. Milkweed is a vital plant for Monarch Butterflies, and Aster and Goldenrod are important late flowering plants. Seeds can be scattered over an area to mimic how they would naturally self-sow, or planted in containers with poor soil. The indoor seeds may need to be wet stratified by storing them in the fridge or freezer for a few weeks in a bag with a spritz of water. With a mix of cultivars and wild flowers, the garden can be at its peak of color and texture all year round.
