Alone in the woods as night falls in the midst of a cold wind and rain downpour, I assess the environment and build debris shelter from sticks and leaves to get protection from elements and stay dry. You want to be on high ground. Don't camp in a depression. Terrain, drainage, materials, ridge pole construction and safety. Primitive camping and building should be part of any Scouts or outdoor program; can also be a fun group or family project!

Although this shelter is built exclusively from natural materials, a plastic poly tarp, rain fly, or Tyvek as roof/siding material is indispensible for a longer term situation. Of course, one could weave birch bark together in traditional native longhouse fashion, but that would take days or weeks for one person to construct. Remember, native tribes worked in teams, from everything to shelter building to foraging to hunting. Going it alone, it behooves the modern human to use plastics, at least for a roof barrier.
