In this Fight class we worked on using an improvised shield to help survive against an attacker using a knife or other edged weapon.

Many common objects can be used as an improved shield. Within our own training center, I pointed out various objects that could be used as a shield: chairs, fire extinguisher, backpack, duffel bag, briefcase, etc.

For training/safety purposes we used the small striking shields and foam training knives.

We practiced using the shield as a blocking tool against all angles of knife attacks using the principles of 360 Degree Outside Defenses and Inside Defenses (Level 1 techniques).

Next we went over using the improvised shield as a striking tool against the attacker's head and various types of Level 1 and 2 Front Kicks to strike the attacker's groin or lower stomach. Which counter attack we use was dependent on the height of the attacker's knife and what angles of knife attacks are being used.

Next we went over tactical considerations with your environment. Staying away from corners and off of walls. Staying out in open space for freedom of movement. Using various obstacles as barriers between you and your attacker. We used chairs and heavy bags for obstacles during sparring. But I pointed out objects that can be used outside such as cars, trees, bushes, and fences to serve the same purpose.

Finally we pressure tested everything with live sparring. The goal of the sparring was to see how long you can survive before getting cut by the knife. In a real situation we would choose to flee the scene/run away quickly (if possible) instead of staying in the same room or in the fight like we did in our rounds of sparring.

The constant movement, running, and faster pace of this type of sparring gave everyone a good cardio workout! Thanks to everyone who participated in this Fight class!
