Our number of the day is R7043. This is how much it will cost South Africans to live a decent life per month this year. This is according to a decent Standard of Living index that was released today. The question is how many of us can afford a decent lifestyle? The study led by Studies in Poverty and the Inequality Institute shows only 3 percent of South Africans currently enjoy this standard of living. The institute says the absolute numbers of people battling to survive on a daily basis has been growing since 2011, as has the pace of inequality. The findings are in line with a Stats SA report that found that more than one in every four South Africans lives, not only below the poverty line but below the level where they can even afford to buy enough food. This latest research was undertaken at the behest of the Department of Social Development. It has resonance with the mandate of the National Planning Commission to foster national discussions on what would constitute a decent standard of living. The UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights noted last month that South Africa lacks a way to measure and monitor whether people's lives are in fact getting better. Unfortunately, all the indicators suggest things are getting worse. For more news, visit: sabcnews.com
