Drugging patients with dementia is an easy way to control them, but the trend is using more creative approaches to avoid restraining and drugging these vulnerable people. Those committing someone with dementia to a nursing home should look for institutions where drugging is discouraged. Research shows that prophylactic mastectomy for women who carry the BRCA1 and BRCA 2 genes does not offer much of an advantage over surveillance – only a 3% reduction in mortality risk. It’s time to re-think the advice we give these women.
