Cincinnati Police Academy recruits begin training

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - “I despise rudeness.”

That was one of the messages from Police Chief Eliot Isaac to 24 members of the new recruit class. He talked to the class that included five vets, 13 college graduates, and his own daughter, who said she was inspired by her father.

A time of protests, tensions, and ambushes. Still the men and women in the classroom want to be cops. Chief Isaac talked about the 2001 riots following a fatal police shooting that changed policing to a partnership with the community. Taking it all in, recruit Kayla Isaac, is the chief's daughter.

“It's a little weird. I'm used to having conversations with my dad, we're very close. We talk about everything especially policing,” she shared.

“I'm a father. She's here but also as police chief, I want to make sure she's prepared like every other recruit; aware of what they're facing,” said Chief Isaac.

It's all in the family for the recruit next to Kayla. Luke Neville grew up with policing. Grandfather Gary Neville was a Cincinnati police captain. Uncle Mike Neville is a captain, Aunt Joyce a specialist and Aunt Terri an assistant chief with CPD. Uncle Rick is a captain in the sheriff’s office and dad is Cincinnati police Captain Russ Neville.

Both recruits found their father's recruit class photos from decades ago. Cincinnati Police Academy now trains recruits from other departments. The class has recruits from Delhi, Colerain Township and the sheriff’s office. Training takes seven months.
