Women Road World Cup: Successful day for Nederland Bloeit Date: 18.04.2011 Description: A successful defence of the World Cup jersey and the race victory signalled a happy day for the Nederland Bloeit team. Marianne Vos won her first World Cup in her home country, the Netherlands. Meanwhile, her team-mate, Annemieke van Vleuten, took sixth place, which was enough to maintain her World Cup lead. With little wind and mild conditions, the Ronde van Drenthe was easier than in previous editions. The cobbles, still with bite, were dry and thus relatively easier to contend with and the (infamous) VAM Berg lacked its usual razor teeth in the benign conditions. American, Alison Starnes (USA National), broke away in the first fifteen kilometres and was quickly joined by Janneke Kanis (Nederland Bloeit). Despite a lead of 1m50 on the main cobbled section, the pair was caught by the end of the cobbles and the peloton reformed into two main groups. It was not until the final time up the VAM Berg, when there were just thirteen kilometres remaining that the pace was significantly lifted. Emma Johansson (HitecProducts) attacked and led over the summit but it was not enough to make a clean break and the race came down to a sprint finish. Marianne Vos popped clear of the other sprinters with 25 metres remaining for her first win in a Dutch World Cup. Her team-mate and World Cup leader, Annemieke van Vleuten crossed the line in sixth position, which was enough to defend her hold at the top of the series. "That sprint was hard. The whole race was hard really. The team worked incredibly hard today so it was great to finish with the win, " said Vos "When you are sprinting against Wild, Teutenberg and Bronzini, you have to be as fast as you can and today I was, it feels great, " she added. "It is great result for the team and I am so happy to still be in the leaders jersey," said van Vleuten after the race. "It just seems to be going on and on, last race me, today Marianne. It is perfect. I felt good this morning, I was not concerned. We are only in the third of nine races so we know it will get harder to defend." Van Vleuten goes to the next round of the World Cup, Fleche Wallone, on Wednesday 20th April with a 24 point advantage over Vos and 39 points ahead of Johansson. Vos is a potential favourite in the Belgian round, as a multiple previous winner, especially after the news over the weekend that Emma Pooley (2010 winner) will not contend the round due to a fractured collarbone
