A very strong upper-level cold pool (500 mb temps below -30C) provided very steep lapse rates and upward forcing from positive vorticity advection aloft. When this system picked up a small amount of additional moisture from the relatively warm waters of Lake Michigan (lake surface temperatures in the upper 50s F), a line of convection blossomed downwind. It's super rare to see convection strong enough to produce thunder and lightning with lifted parcel temperatures only around 50F in Michigan. Warm lake waters and some inland morning sunshine was enough to boost SBCAPE to around 500 J/Kg just as the upper cold pool pushed in. Temperatures fell quickly later in the afternoon and by evening there were a few snow flurries in the air. First flakes of the season!
