While rowing is entirely it's own movement, there are a few cues we can take from the fitness world that can help us on the rower. Two of these come from the barbell (deadlift and snatch or clean) and one from the kettlebell.

It's important to note that while we can take cues from the movement, rowing is not a horizontal deadlift. No, it's not. However, we do take away one of our biggest personal mantras "push don't pull". Just as we want you to push the earth away from you, rather than pulling the bar towards you (which creates a much more challenging lift) -- we want you to push machine away from you. That engages the entire leg and drives into the machine, causing a stronger stroke.

Second, a clean or a snatch: set up in position and keep your hips and trunk locked in place as the bar is moving upwards. How does this translate? Locking your hips in place and being able to move through space and time translates directly to the drive.

The Kettlebell is all about dynamic hip opening and closing. We use the exact same opening and closing on the machine. So while it's important to note that rowing is it's own unique movement, there are cues everywhere in the fitness world we can draw from to make ourselves better, more functional athletes and rowers!
