Give the Gift of Life: Hoxworth needs extra blood donors this time of year

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - If you are making your list and checking it twice, healthcare providers are reminding you there's something really nice you could put on it: donating blood.

That's the request from Hoxworth Blood Centers as donors are needed -- especially in the next few weeks.

Traditionally, donors drop this time of year, according to Hoxworth. With school drives on a break at colleges and high schools and many regular donors on vacation or heading south for winter, the holiday weeks can be tough for those in need of blood in our area.

At the same time, with more accidents and travel on the roads, the need for blood can rise at any moment. A lot of people who are off work or who have met insurance deductibles also schedule elective surgeries at the end of the year. That too can drive up the need for blood in hospitals and operating rooms.

And on Wednesday, you get some added incentive if you donate. Hoxworth is giving away free donor shirts.
