This clip offers an invaluable account from a survivor of the Christchurch, New Zealand, earthquakes of what would have helped her be better prepared to cope with the post-earthquake phase.

Lib makes it very clear - in a world without power, you’d better be ready to go old school. That means having an emergency-ready box of provisions to hand, including candles, matches, a torch and batteries, and food.

In addition to this, she describes what ran out first in Christchurch - water, cash money, and fuel. In a situation where you can’t just go to the shops and buy water, or get money from an ATM, or fill your tank up at the garage, you will be best prepared if you have a stock of the necessary items to hand.

She also talks about the crucial power of community to help the individual survive at these times of extremity, and how having a pre-arranged ‘checking in’ plan with loved ones can mean the difference between miserable uncertainty and staying connected.
