Bryan shows us how to make a letter opener out of part of a horseshoe. Materials: Old Horseshoe Horn anvil Blacksmith hammer Fork Hardy Step 1: Cut the horseshoe keeping one side a little more than half the original length. Step 2: Straightening. Heat the entire piece. Bryan uses a Turning Fork mounted in the hole of the anvil. (You could hammer on the horn end of the anvil but this is a little tricky because it can get away from you). bend about half of the horseshoe to straighten. This will take a few heating and bending steps. Step 3: Forming the blade. Square up and pull the blade end. Again, repeated heating and hammering are necessary. Step 4: OPTIONAL. You can make a sharp edge with a file. Throughout the video Bryan discusses the advantages and disadvantages of coal fired forges vs gas fired forges.
