Reinald Werrenrath was America's most prominent homegrown baritone from around 1917 till into the mid 1920's. He enjoyed great success with parlor room ballads and songs with music set to Kipling verses. Had this type of music remained popular, he might be better remembered today. Reinald made his recording debut in 1904 with Edison's National Phonograph Company as the baritone of the Criterion Quartette. Werrenrath is the only artist on the Victor label to have been issued on the black, purple, blue and red labels. There were a couple of other artists to have done this but only because the blue label was discontinued and thus they got put on the red seal label. Werrenrath had been on the red seal label long before the blue label was discontinued. In 1914 his name was on two red seal records, which in this period was unusual for a singer who had not made a name for himself on the operatic stage.
