You could distort your hub, damage your bearings or even in extreme cases mess up your alignment and damage other components. Plus it hurts my ears to hammer on that kind of thing, even with hearing protection. This is easy, with only a ball joint remover, a spacer, and an extra lug nut I swapped out my lug studs. The impact gun is optional (and faster) but you can just use a ratchet or breaker bar.
