Leopold Stokowski recorded Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" in 1966 at a time when 'authentic performance' and 'period instruments' recordings were still to come. Therefore, his version is not for the purists! Nevertheless, the Gramophone wrote: "Hugh Bean plays brilliantly ... It is a dramatic performance and surely this is what we want for programme music." In addition to Bean's solo violin, we hear Charles Spinks on the harpsichord and the New Philharmonia Orchestra. (A Cala CD, licensed from Decca.)
