Terry Dougherty is the director of the free military tutoring program, “They Are Heroes Too!”, which provides free tutoring services for children of armed forces service members. As the wife of a 30-year U.S. Coast Guard serviceman, Dougherty and her family transferred often during his time in the service. Noticing her daughter’s education beginning to fall behind as a result of the continual moving, Dougherty set out to fix the problem, which is prevalent among many military families. That’s why she started “They Are Heroes Too!” Dougherty’s model emphasizes fun in the classroom with puzzles, interactive games, dry erase boards and more as the tools for inspired learning from top brands including Sharpie, Expo, Newell Rubbermaid, Mr. Sketch and Paper Mate. By many accounts from armed service members, Dougherty’s program helps their children get acclimated to their new surroundings and ease their transitions during difficult moves. “The children of members of the armed forces are never really recognized for their sacrifices,” says Dougherty. “Not a lot of people understand what the children go through. Over many holidays, graduations and other functions, they don’t have a parent there because they’re serving. I named it ‘They Are Heroes Too!’ because that’s what I believe they are.
