For the first time in its history, Twitter is changing its character limit.

It is doubling the character limit for a Tweet, i-e increasing the limit from 140 characters to 280 characters.

Right now, only a "small group of people" will get this new limit, twitter will roll out it to everyone later. But now all users will be able to see the longer tweets.

Twitter is going to try out the longer limit, 280 characters, in languages impacted by cramming. i-e all the languages except Japanese, Chinese, and Korean.

Because in languages like Japanese, Korean, and Chinese you can convey about double the amount of information in one character as you can in many other languages, like English, Spanish, Portuguese, or French.

According to Twitter blog post, only a small percent of Tweets sent in Japanese have 140 characters. But in English, a much higher percentage of Tweets have 140 characters. So they made this decision for increasing the limit.
