CINCINNATI (WKRC) - President Trump's bombshell on imposing new tariffs continues to reverberate around the world.

Thursday, the president made the surprise announcement that he plans to put a 25 percent tariff on imported steel and ten percent on aluminum.

Mr. Trump says the goal is to protect american jobs and strengthen the economy. Critics say the tariff hike would ultimately be passed on to consumers through price hikes, and other countries would add tariffs of their own, hurting our exports.

Cincinnati Congressman Brad Wenstrup told Jeff Hirsh the key is not the broad policy announcement, but how the president's plan is specifically applied, "The fact is that we want to be a country, like the president said in Davos, yeah, it is America first but not America alone. So, the type of implementation can make a difference. Let's take a look at it and see where it goes."

When asked if the tariffs could lead to a trade war which could backfire, Rep. Wenstrup replied, "I think it could, but I believe the president is going to be very cautious on that."
