What is the meaning of felling trees? Felling is the process of cutting down individual trees, an element of the task of logging. The person cutting the trees is a feller. When you cut down a tree or fell a tree with a chainsaw, there is a proper method you should try to follow. First determine which direction the tree will fall. Look at the tree and determine if it is leaning more in any particular direction. If possible work with the natural possible fall of the tree. Next, cut a "V" in the tree (a felling notch) in the direction you would like it to fall. The "V" cut should be approximately 25% of the depth of the tree. The bottom and top lines of the cut should meet without crossing. This can be tricky. Next, cut a direct line on half of the back of the tree (felling cut). Only cut half of this line (1/4 of the tree). Make sure you leave some space between your back cut and your front "V" cut. This space should be approximately 10% of the tree's diameter (the hinge). Do not cut all the way across just half way. Insert a felling wedge into the cut. This wedge will help begin to lean the pressure of the tree onto the "V" cut. Finally, cut the second half of your back cut. Be sure to keep an eye on the tree and move away quickly as the tree begins to fall. If your chainsaw gets stuck in the tree, leave it and move away. Do not attempt to cut or fell a dead tree if you are a beginner. Trees that have been dead and rotting may be weaker and require more experience for safety.
