Hurricane Sandy is thankfully no more, but only after causing major damage throughout the Caribbean and of course, in the United States. Damages could soar above 20 billion dollars, more than what was seen by Irene of last year. The death toll is over 130, and may still rise.
Sandy formed in the central Caribbean, and shooted northwards towards Jamaica, where it made landfall as a developing Category 1 hurricane. The storm continued to strengthen and struck Cuba at peak intensity - a 110mph Category 2 hurricane. Its strength caused major damage in the landfall area, but its rainfall caused problems further afield, such as in vulnerable Haiti where there were over 50 fatalities. The storm then barrelled through the Bahamas and weakened to a Category 1 hurricane midway through its passage, causing lesser damage and a single fatality.
Sandy curved out to sea before hooking right back in to a New Jersey landfall, with the 90mph storm turning extratropical shortly before landfall.
Sandy will go down in the history books as one of America's costliest storms, and the name will surely be retired from the naming list
