The moose is the larges member of the deer family. 'Moose' is an Indian name, meaning 'twig eater'. A moose mostly eats leaves and water plants, which is why it can be found near water and swamps. Because it has long legs it can easily wade through water and moose are also excellent swimmers. In May the female moose gives birth to one or two young. In this period, mother moose is one of the Rockies' most dangerous animals.
