Robin Cook was the Foreign secretary who resigned in protest at the illegal invasion of Iraq by the British Army ordered by a majority vote in by the House of Commons, and in line with contemporary American policy, despite ongoing co-operation by Iraq with the weapons inspections overseen by Hans Blix.

It was one of the only speeches ever given in the house of commons to receive a round of applause, which is forbidden by the code of conduct in the house.

The United Nations declared the war illegal in 2004.

Robin Cook died suddenly and unexpectedly in 2005.
