By Drew Bollea A teacher at Chattanooga's Howard School and an urban farming specialist spoke to students Tuesday about how they can impact their community through food. Most of them all they know is fast food or what comes out of a box, said Linda Sullivan, a teacher at Howard School. She is on a mission to grow local food with her students. We realized that the greenhouse was so old that the covering that was on it killed our plants, said Sullivan speaking about the old greenhouse on campus that had been used as a storage facility. With the help of a few grants, Sullivan and her motivated students cleaned out the dilapidated greenhouse and are making upgrades. Start the cuttings and the seeds in here, said Sullivan, standing in the greenhouse, grow it to where they are big enough to go into the ground. She also built 3 raised beds of plants in the courtyard. Now, her students can live the gardening process..It was the first time some of them have ever seen fresh food in the ground, said Sullivan, and it was the first time that they could pick something, put it in their mouth and taste it. Will Allen,CEO of Growing Power, is a farmer and expert on local food. He spoke with the students about a healthy diet on a personal level. We are all connected in the food system and they need a better understanding of what to eat, said Allen. Sullivan sees everyday meals as a learning opportunity that can shape the students eating habits and eventually rub off on the community. A lot of people they're use to getting things from society, said Sullivan, but they're not use to giving back.Having the students see, feel and taste the healthy results of their hard work, she says can be contagious. What you grew and what you have done, you can give to others, said Sullivan, and they can be happy and appreciative of it.To help Howard School build their greenhouse and start growing crops, CLICK HERE.
