The good news, no chickens were there! The fire happened around 9:30 Friday night along Cedar Springs Road. It forced nearby homes to be evacuated and farmers now scrambling to recover hundreds of dollars worth of equipment lost in the fire."90% of the Bradley County fire department was here last night, there were trucks everywhere," says JC McMahan.JC McMahan only has memories of the chicken house he used to rent out. It now sits in pieces. He believes someone who lives nearby set the place on fire."There was someone seen in this area, right before the fire," says McMahan.Jonathan Townsend lives right next door. He says the fire was intentional."There were some kids walking down the driveway as we come home, and we come back out of the house and we were putting groceries up - it was gone," says Townsend.Amanda Montgomery also lives next door and wants the guys responsible to be punished for their actions."The people that we saw walking have been known to ask around if they can play in the chicken house and we told them no - and they've been roaming around the neighborhood a lot," says Montgomery.JC McMahan grew up on a farm and has been farming for nearly 70 years. For the past 6 years, he's used this chicken house to store equipment like hay trailers, hay rakes, and his 90 bells of hay - all of which he lost in last night's fire. But he didn't lose everything."My machines weren't in there, my hay rake weren't in there, and all my equipment is at home because I been working with another farm with it," says McMahan.Grateful he didn't lose everything, JC sits waiting for answers and wants the culprits to pay.JC says he plans to continue farming and move forward. We've left a message for the Bradley County fire chief and have not heard back yet. A spokesperson working in the 9-1-1 center tells us so far no arson investigators have been called out to investigate the scene.Depend on NewsChannel 9 to bring you more on the investigation as firefighters gather more details.
