CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A study headline that said milk didn't matter for better bones is being disputed by another study.

In the disputing study, scientists tracked milk drinkers. 80,000 women, and 43,000 men, for more than 30 years.

They discovered those who got at least a glass of milk per day, had a 17 percent lower risk of breaking a hip bone than those who got one glass or less per week. With two glasses a week, you can drop the risk 23 percent.

Dr. Jonathan Slaughter, who is a bone specialist at OrthoCincy, says careful steps to keep from falling can help prevent bone breaks too.

“What a lot of people don't realize is that it's the change in surface, so they will be rushing in, they get inside, they go from the carpet right inside to that floor, like in a supermarket, they bring in snow, it melts people step on that slick tile floor, slip, boom, down floor, broken wrist, broken hip,” said Dr. Slaughter.

That means there should be extra caution now, what with the Ohio River water all around on surfaces right now.

By the way, in case you are wondering, those who were cheese or yogurt eaters did not have the same association of lower risk for hip fractures.

The study was published in the Journal Osteoporosis.
