He was asked to describe a time when he had to be polite in Speaking Part 2, and then answer more questions about the topic of politeness in Part 3. We did an episode on the podcast with brainstorms and sample answers for the Part 2 question, and today I’ll expand on that with possible Part 3 questions and answers. In Part 3, you should try and answer honestly and directly, giving your opinion about the topic immediately. Then, support that with specific examples and details. These can be drawn from your own observations about your society and culture, and your personal experience. Speaking Part 3 questions about Politeness: When do you think it is important to be polite? Are rules of politeness changing in your culture? Is being polite different than being nice? That last question is very difficult. It’s really, honestly, something I’ve never thought about, and I doubt you have either! So, I answer honestly right away, noting that it’s a challenging and odd question, and giving my honest opinion that the two behaviors are usually synonymous. Now it’s your turn to practice! Watch my answers a couple times and note down transition phrases and vocabulary. Then, try to give your own answers out loud, utilizing some of my phrases.
