Sarkozy's to stand trial over falsified accounts in his re-election bid

A French magistrate has ordered former president Nicolas Sarkozy to stand trial over irregularities in the funding of his failed 2012 re-election bid. Sarkozy is said to have spent way more than he was entitled to, despite warnings from his accountants. The charge now exposes the 62-year old conservative politician to a one-year prison sentence if convicted. His lawyer Thierry Herzog though describes the trial order as "inane". He says he will lodge an appeal against it. But Republican member Pierre Lellouche says the justice system must be respected.
